Are you thinking about the death of the heifer?

Como estão meus amigos? Aqui estou eu, outra vez, utilizando o poder da internet para chegar até vós e contar-vos mais uma origem de um dos Portuguese Sayings!

Hoje vamos falar sobre o pensamento da morte da bezerra. É um dizer muito estranho, mas é muito comum ouvir isto.

Normalmente as pessoas dizem isto quando vêem alguém pensativo, sem reacção e a olhar para o vazio. Muitas vezes as pessoas dizem isto de uma forma muito divertida quando apanham uma pessoa a pensar na morte da bezerra, mas a origem deste dizer é, de certa forma, bastante trágica.

Mas porque razão se diz pensar na morte da bezerra e não em outro animal qualquer? E porque razão esta frase ficou associada com o ver uma pessoa calada e distante?

Tal como muitos dos dizeres Portugueses, a origem deste dizer é bíblica. Os hebreus sacrificavam bezerros para agradar a deus. Absalão, filho do Rei David, estava a sacrificar bezerros e entretanto ficou sem mais nenhum para sacrificar, só faltava mesmo uma bezerra que era do seu filho menor. Quando Absalão resolveu sacrificar a bezerra do seu filho, este opôs-se veementemente, pois era muito chegado à bezerra. Infelizmente, Absalão decidiu ir para a frente com o sacrifício da bezerra. O filho assistiu a tudo e desde esse dia ficou sentado ao pé do altar "pensando na morte da sua bezerra". Meses mais tarde o filho de Absalão morreu.

Acho que deve ter sido um dos primeiros relatos de uma pessoa que morreu de depressão. É um pouco trágica a origem deste dizer, mas foi assim que se passou a usar esta expressão.

E foi mais um episódio do Portuguese Sayings Blog, o espaço onde se explica porque raio falamos de uma forma tão estranha. Até à próxima! ;)

Today we are going to talk about "the death of the heifer". It is a very weird saying, but it is very common to hear this in Portugal.

Usually, people say this to someone that is thoughtful, with no reaction and with empty looking eyes. It is usual to say this as a joke to make fun of the guy that they caught somebody thinking in the death of the heifer, but the origin of this saying is somewhat tragic.

But why heifer and not another animal? Why this saying is associated to someone that is quiet and distant?

This is another Saying that has it's based on the bible. The Hebrews sacrificed heifers to worship god. Absalom, son of the king David, was sacrificing a lot of heifers and he needed more to sacrifice. So he decided to sacrifice the heifer of his son. His son liked a lot of that heifer and he didn't want that his dad sacrificed his lamb. But Absalam did it anyway, and he did it with his son present, and his son was devastated. His son was very sad and we would go near the altar where the lamb has sacrificed and he just sit there, sad, with empty eyes, without reaction... just really depressed. Months later the son of Absalam died.

I think this must be one of the first documented cases of someone that died because of a depression. It's really tragic the origin of this saying.
